Porthcawl and surrounding area welcomed British, French, Dutch, Canadian, Polish and American servicemen and women
during WWII. They stayed in hotels, guest houses, nissen huts and tents and trained at nearby RAF Stormy Down and Kenfig
and at the Air Sea Rescue Unit at The Jennings Building in Porthcawl habour.

War Years around Kenfig
Throughout 1940 a network of defences were built across the UK to prevent an anticipated
German invasion.
These defences called Pill Boxes were squat concrete forts sited at road junctions and other
strategic locations throughout the area - local examples around the Kenfig area are listed in this section.
