Ghost Stories from around Kenfig
Background
This phenonmen is associated with a ghostly procession in which the figures were only vaguely seen;
one figure of a person or a coffin is more distinctly seen and the funeral procession invariably follows
the route to a house of the person about to die.
Porthcawl Phantom Funeral
On a September's evening during the early 20th century, a Porthcawl man was returning from Sker.
It was a bright moonlight night and shinning out at sea was the wreck of a huge vessel.
A group of people were busily engaged wading out to the ship and carrying something ashore. The man
couldn't see exactly what it was, however surmised it might be a coffin due to its shape.
The men formed up on the beach, shouldered the object and made off for the town. He began following
at a safe distance and received a shock when the procession halted outside his own house. As he tried to
catch up with them they suddenly vanished.
A week later a large vessel was wrecked off Sker and among the dead was the man's own brother who
had been on a two year voyage. The corpse was borne in the moonlight to the man's house along exactly
the same route the phantom funeral had taken.
Maudlam Phantom Funeral
One summer night a local lady was awakened and being unable to resume her sleep, went to the bedroom window.
The countryside was swathed in bright moonlight and there, in the lane just outside the farmhouse, she saw the
shaddowy outlines of a funeral procession.
As she watched, the cortege stopped and "changed hands" (a fresh team of pall-bearers relieved the carriers
of the coffin). She continued to watch as the procession wended its way down the lane in the direction of Maudlam church.
A week later a neighbour was taken ill at the exact spot where the change of hands had taken place. The lady gave
assistance, however, the person died soon afterwards, being buried in Maudlam churchyard.
The funeral procession taking exactly the same route as she had previously witnessed.
