In 1167 the town of Kenfig was burnt by the Welsh on the night of St Hilary the Bishop
(January 13th) - 843 years ago. According to folklore January 13th is reputed to be the coldest day of the year. |

On 30 January 1607 Kenfig suffered a great storm - many people died when lowland areas were flooded.
Experts now believe a suspected Tsunami in the Bristol Channel was responsible. |

In 1537 Margam Abbey was surrendered to King Henry VIII on 28 February under the Dissolution of
the Monastries Act. |

In 1731 Kenfig Burgesses met on Monday 22 February at the mount on the south side of Kenfig Castle to plant
sedges - this ancient custom was carried out to minimise sand movement. |

In 1739 the Sloop 'Mary of Tenerif' was wrecked on Kenfig Sands on 19th February - it was carrying a cargo
of wine from the Canary Islands to Bristol. |

Morgan Gam with the town outside the gates being burned
and the castle keep seized; most of the townspeople stayed in the church which was spared by the attackers |

22 July 1679 - Father Philip Evans sentenced to death at Cardiff; St Philip Evans was arrested at Sker House in 1678 in the hysteria
of the Titus Oates plot to kill King Charles II

25 July - St James, the patron saint of Kenfig falls on July 25th; In medieval times Kenfig held a fair which lasted for 8days and started on the eve of St James Day. |

Pyle Calvinistic Methodist Chapel
Capel y Pil - The End of an Era (1786 - 2010)
A decision has been taken to close the Chapel. A special closing service was held at the chapel
on Tuesday February 09 at 2pm.
