January

In Years Gone By

In 1167 the town of Kenfig was burnt by the Welsh on the night of St Hilary the Bishop (January 13th) - 843 years ago. According to folklore January 13th is reputed to be the coldest day of the year.
*
On 30 January 1607 Kenfig suffered a great storm - many people died when lowland areas were flooded. Experts now believe a suspected Tsunami in the Bristol Channel was responsible.

In 1537 Margam Abbey was surrendered to King Henry VIII on 28 February under the Dissolution of the Monastries Act.
*
In 1731 Kenfig Burgesses met on Monday 22 February at the mount on the south side of Kenfig Castle to plant sedges - this ancient custom was carried out to minimise sand movement.
*
In 1739 the Sloop 'Mary of Tenerif' was wrecked on Kenfig Sands on 19th February - it was carrying a cargo of wine from the Canary Islands to Bristol.

25 March 1886 - Kenfig was dissolved as a Borough under the Municipal Corporations Act 1883.

29 March 1542 - Richard Williams received the land of Sker from King Henry VIII by letters Patent.

1232 Eastertide - The town of Kenfig was attacked by Morgan Gam with the town outside the gates being burned and the castle keep seized; most of the townspeople stayed in the church which was spared by the attackers

13 April 1833 - Inquest jury into death of 11 year old Ann Thomas who was entangled in machinery at Llanmihangel Corn Mill

19 April 1867 - Mayor of Kenfig, Rees Rees charged with being drunk & riotous

11 May 1668 - Phillip, Earl of Pembroke sold his manor of Kenfig to Sir Edward Mansel of Margam for £525
*
31 May 1817 - A Bandy/Bando match was played on Kenfig Sands between Newton Nottage and Margam (about 3000 people watched the match which lasted for 4hrs - the game was won by Margam)

24 May 1850 - Final entry to Kenfig Borough Minute Books. This appears to deal with the safe custody of the borough seal & the keys to the safe.

10 June 1818 - Lewis Weston Dilwyn visited Pyle whilst canvassing for election as MP for the Glamorgan Boroughs in which he was unsuccessful.

Summer Months 1849 - Cholera reared its ugly head after respite of 17years; 57 deaths recorded around Pyle, Tythegston & Kenfig Hill.

22 July 1679 - Father Philip Evans sentenced to death at Cardiff; St Philip Evans was arrested at Sker House in 1678 in the hysteria of the Titus Oates plot to kill King Charles II [ Learn more ]

22 July - Maudlam Church was built c.1255 and is dedicated to St Mary Magdalen; her festival date is July 22nd.
25 July - St James, the patron saint of Kenfig falls on July 25th; In medieval times Kenfig held a fair which lasted for 8days and started on the eve of St James Day.

Pyle Calvinistic Methodist Chapel

Capel y Pil - The End of an Era (1786 - 2010)

A decision has been taken to close the Chapel. A special closing service was held at the chapel on Tuesday February 09 at 2pm.
The chapel was dissovled and has been handed over to the Presbyterian Church of Wales.
