In Years Gone By

In 1167 the town of Kenfig was burnt by the Welsh on the night of St Hilary the Bishop (January 13th) - 843 years ago. According to folklore January 13th is reputed to be the coldest day of the year.

On 30 January 1607 Kenfig suffered a great storm - many people died when lowland areas were flooded. Experts now believe a suspected Tsunami in the Bristol Channel was responsible.

In 1537 Margam Abbey was surrendered to King Henry VIII on 28 February under the Dissolution of the Monastries Act.

In 1731 Kenfig Burgesses met on Monday 22 February at the mount on the south side of Kenfig Castle to plant sedges - this ancient custom was carried out to minimise sand movement.

In 1739 the Sloop 'Mary of Tenerif' was wrecked on Kenfig Sands on 19th February - it was carrying a cargo of wine from the Canary Islands to Bristol.
