Nash Point Lighthouses

The Nash Point Lighthouses have helped mariners to keep clear of the Nash Sands since the disaster of the paddle steamer Frolic in 1831.
The paddle steamer Frolic sank with the loss of all onboard on 16 March 1831 at Nash Sands, Porthcawl. As a direct result of this tradegy the Nash Lighthouses were constructed to guide vessels safely around the notorious Nash Sands.

This website is supported by Bridgend Library and Information Services (Bridgend County Borough Council) with regards digitally documenting all information pertaining to the Kenfig and surrounding areas that it holds within its Coed Parc Reference Library and other library locations throughout the Bridgend County Borough.

War Years around Kenfig

Throughout 1940 a network of defences were built across the UK to prevent an anticipated German invasion.
These defences called Pill Boxes were squat concrete forts sited at road junctions and other strategic locations throughout the area - local examples around the Kenfig area are listed in this section.

Sker House & The Maids of Sker

The Great House at Sker began its origins as a monastic grange nearly a thousand years ago. Farmed by Cistercian Monks, then wealthy gentlemen tennant farmers - it is now privately owned.
After falling into decline over the years, extensive restoration works eventually saved Sker House for posterity through National Heritage Lottery funding - Sker House is of Grade 1 listed status. Learn of the beauty & turbulent past of Sker House together with its lovelorn maids. There is even an Australian Connection with the Maid of Sker story.
