The Annual Gambo RaceBackground - What is the Gambo Race?
The Gambo Race is a charity-based community event organised as a joint venture by Pyle RFC and The Cornelly
Arms public house. It was started in 2001 and has become an institution in its own right
gaining a reputation as a great and fun day out for all.
The Gambo Race has been documented online exclusively by Kenfig.org since 2003 with unprecidented success
attracting viewing from across the world and even helping to boost the moral of British Forces serving overseas.
The event attracts visitors to the Kenfig and surrounding areas from right across the UK and from around the world.
Exclusive to Kenfig.orgKenfig.org has covered the event since 2003 due to popular demand.
The online worldwide response has been staggering... the inclusion of the Gambo Race on this website initially provided
the catalyst for the mainstay of the website's marketing strategies. In 2008 the first five days coverage
attracted ¼ million hits - this compared to 55,000 hits in the month following our initial coverage in 2003.
Local Newspaper CoverageKenfig.org was responsible for both the 2003 & 2004 Gambo Race photos in the Glamorgan Gazette Newspaper,
a local newspaper covering the whole of the Bridgend County Borough and published by
(Wales Online) - Westerm Mail & South Wales Echo Publications, Cardiff,
South Wales. The Western Mail is owned by Trinity Mirror Group.
Local Newsletter CoveragePrevious photos of the Annual Gambo Race were published in the local MCK Newsletter thus providing further
coverage of the event to people who do not have access to the Internet - sadly the MCK Newsletter ended in 2004.
Rural Development - BridgendReach is the new name for the Rural Development Programme in Bridgend. It’s the first time the county has had funding of this nature from Europe.
Funded through the
European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development
and the Welsh Assembly Government the aim of reach is to create a cohesive, sustainable and connected rural Bridgend

The Annual Gambo RaceThe Annual Gambo Race held each August Bank Holiday weekend throughout the Kenfig vicinity has been listed as a Carnival/Community Event
through the Reach (The Rural Development Programme in Bridgend) rural tourism directory.
Topical Debate - Road Closures & the Costs...See below & take part in our Viewers PollWhat is a Gambo?"A Gambo is basically a cart or trolley that has to be pushed/pulled by hand to move it. There are many variations of its name in force depending on an individual's location throughout the United Kingdom and around the world."Quote: Rob Bowen - (Chair/Author/Webmaster) Kenfig.org Local Community Group
A Farm Cart
Traditionally a Gambo was / is a kind of cart without sides used in South Wales by farmers. A Gambo is a two wheeled
flat bed vehicle native to Wales and the Marches and to some extent the Cotswolds and the South West of England.
It was used mainly for harversting in hilly areas.

Dictionary DefinitionsThere is no entry in the Oxford English Dictionary
for the word 'GAMBO'. However, as a gambo is much the same as a 'cart' and a 'trolley', the following entries are outlined below:
WenglishWenglish is the peculiarities of the Welsh/English dialect. A lifetime study by John Edwards,
he named this dialectical oddity "Wenglish" and recorded it as it is spoken, mainly in the valleys
and townships of South Wales (Old South Wales).
Originally a farm cart, a dray, but used in
WENGLISH to mean a vehicle which is lacking in refinement and performance.
