The Annual Gambo Race 2006Photos
This Years Event
This years event just about tops it all, once again amazing weather, public support and most of all good behaviour
by everyone both taking part and spectating this years event.
People travelled to the area from far and wide to this
now well established event in South Wales. 'Amazing community spirit' was the order of the day and feedback from many people.
I spoke to people from London, Birmingham, Manchester, together from many parts of South Wales and there were people who deferred a holiday
to the UK by a month to witness this event who were from Australia. Members of the UK's British Forces were also present as in
previous years.
Kenfig.org took over 300 photos of this years event from its start at the Prince of Wales, Kenfig to its finish
at Pyle RFC. The sheer volume of peoples enroute was outstanding.
Website Visitors
The online worldwide response has been staggering... the first five days online coverage of this years event
attracted in excess of 50,000 hits causing some technical problems immediately and subsequently afterwards.
Accurate ReportingThe Kenfig.org team go to extreme lengths to acquire the facts before publication, (There is always
going to be a point of ambiguity where historical information is concerned), however, when a real event is documented
as in 'The Gambo Race', reporting is done LIVE on the day so there should be no discrepanices with the facts of the event.
A number of people assumed that Kenfig.org was responsible for a brief report in the Glamorgan Gazette (31/08/06)
of this years event - No we were not. There were a few discrepancies with the report which were noted for future
historical researchers should they take the newspaper report as gospel.
These discrepancies refer to the following:
Disclaimer:Kenfig.org is not in anyway undermining the Glamorgan Gazette or any of its associates with regards to the
above statement - we are merely reporting on a situation that has been brought to our attention by other members of the
community.
Not so good thingsA number of people complained to myself during the day's event as to some of the following.
Traffic Problems
Traffic problems were witnessed by all, more so by South Wales Police who decided to close
off sections of the highway to traffic in the interests of public safety throughout the day.
Personal discussions with
Police Officers by myself pointed to good behaviour by all in general, yet a lot of traffic appeared to be
generated by local residents who should have known better - it is easier to walk around the community instead of using a vehicle
and hence cause further traffic congestion.
Newspaper PublicationsKenfig.org was responsible for the Gambo Race photos in the Glamorgan Gazette Newspaper in 2003 & 2004.
The Gazette sent out its own reporter in 2005 to cover the event. This year I was asked by one of our local county councillors
if I was providing photographic coverage for the newspaper - I replied that I wasn't. The Gambo Race coverage is exclusive
to this website - if a newspaper is not prepared to pay its staff on a bank holiday weekend and wishes photos from oursleves
then they have to pay for the privilage, especially after some of the problems we have encountered with the newspaper in
recent years was my response.
