Kenfig - The Complete History (e-Resource)
Latest Community News
Kenfig.org Local Community Group
This is a not for profit making organisation operating the only comprehensive website project documenting
the entire history of the old Kenfig Borough / old Bro Cynffig. It operates out of North Cornelly and reaches an online
target audience of around 2 million worldwide visitors a year on average.
The website was originally established in March 2003 and operated as a single identity until March 2004 when
the project was turned into a community group. The website is part-funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and
Bridgend County Borough Council.
Heritage Status
In December 2005, the National Library of Wales recognised the website www.kenfig.org.uk as 'An important part
of Wales' documentary heritage' and requested the website's archiving through both the National Library and
the UK Web Archiving Consortium.
Educational Resource - Curriculum Cymreig Guide
Since 2004, the website www.kenfig.org.uk has been listed as an online resource (e-Resource) on the Curriculum Cymreig Guide.
Confusing Community Issues
Bro Cynffig Chronicles
A nearly identical website project was established between November 2006 and Easter 2009 to ape that of the Kenfig.org project, but involving
local school children in the immediate communities of North Cornelly, Pyle, Kenfig Hill and Cefn Cribbwr.
The project involved Bridgend County Borough Council Education Department, Kenfig history society and
some other local community organisations. The project was granted £49,600.00 Heritage Lottery monies to
research, document and create a local history website - exactly the same purpose as that of our own project.
Legal Issues
As a direct result of the above, some legal issues came into force due to the following:
|
Kenfig.org Local Community Group is a registered community group operating within the Bridgend County Borough
through Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations (BAVO). |
|
The Kenfig.org website project is funded and supported by the Welsh Assembly Government. |
|
The Kenfig.org website project is funded by Bridgend County Borough Council. |
|
The Kenfig.org Local Community Group owns the exclusive publishing rights to a comprehensive website
documenting the entire history of the old Kenfig Borough / old Bro Cynffig. |
|
The Kenfig.org website project has been awarded Heritage Status. |
Outcome
The Cynffig Chronicles project was allowed to continue albeit with some strict legal constraints imposed
by the Government - the project is only allowed to portray the history of the area through the words and drawings
of the children themselves; publishing any other materials pertaining to the history of the area, especially in a
constructive and structured manner will invoke serious legal implications.
The structure of a website is legally protected by Intellectual Property & copyright laws - the Kenfig.org website
has a comprehensive structure covering the entire history of the Kenfig and surrounding areas, which is protected
under such laws.
Protecting our Property & the Nation's Heritage
Mr Rob Bowen as main copyright owner of the website www.kenfig.org.uk / www.cynffig.org.uk has granted
the National Library of Wales a licence to copy, archive and amend the Kenfig.org website over time in order for its preservation.
The copyright owner to the Kenfig.org website has no qualms about instructing specialist Intellectual Property Rights
Lawyers to intervene in any situation where a breach of copyright & moral rights on our works have been breached and/or
where the situation would be detrimental to the preservation of the nation's heritage through the Kenfig.org website project.

Ownership of Local History
Dispelling some Myths
Without casting shadows and dispersions over some in our local community, there are however, some
individuals and committee members alike, within some local organisations who are under the illusion that
their organisation(s) owns the history to the immediate Kenfig and surrounding areas.
They fail to understand that history belongs to the public, they themselves have obtained the information they hold
from reference libraries, the public records office and the like, which are public bodies - information that
is held in the public domain, for the general public.
Local Party Politics
Since we set up the Kenfig.org website project and turned it into a community group, there have been
some local party politics that have emerged, some with a view determined to try to undermine this successful online project.
There are still some organisations in the immediate local community who will not ackowledge the existence of the Kenfig.org
Local Community Group and refuse to communicate with us entirely - even though our community group
is recognised by the Government and many influential institutions globally.
There are still some in the immediate local community who are under the illusion that they own the history
to the area and it is they who are going to construct
a comprehensive website aping what the Kenfig.org Local Community Group has already established - we say, carry on...
just remember the legal issues surrounding a decision of this nature and the legal costs involved.
The Kenfig.org Local Community Group is responsible for the Kenfig Heritage website which has the full
backing and support of the Welsh Assembly Government in all its endeavours.
Kenfig.org Local Community Group
Due to our Heritage Status, we have been granted permission to obtain information for the Kenfig.org website
from various sources, most of which are in the public domain. If we feel it is in the interests of the nation's heritage
and more so, in the interests of every child's education both locally, nationally and internationally, we will utilize
that information within our website project from whatever the angle; we give full accreditation where all information
is obtained from throughout the website as per norm.
The Kenfig.org website project has been given full use of all materials contained within Bridgend County Borough
Council's Library and Information Services department.
Right to voice an opinion - Freedom of Speech
The Kenfig.org Local Community Group operates within the areas of North Cornelly, Pyle, Kenfig Hill and
Cefn Cribbwr - in recent years some local politics have emerged within the immediate locality which has
caused some confusion as to whom is doing what... as far as a local history website is concerned.
As part of our website objectives in providing news and information to the local communities, especially
where public monies are concerned and of which have been spent on attempting to ape the Kenfig.org history project and where
we need the full support of the communities for the Kenfig.org website project, we feel it is acceptable
to advise the public of this situation that has arisen within our own communities under the Freedom of Information Act.
