The Kenfig.org WebsiteBackground
kenfig.org.uk has been established as a one-stop online resource for learning about local history in and
around the Kenfig Borough - South Wales.
It has been established with an overview of encouraging the learning of local history by
one and all, but more importantly, the younger generations who have to learn aspects of history as well as
ICT and Internet Skills which forms a part of the National Curriculum within the United Kingdom.
Kenfig.org operates as a not-for profit making organisation known as Kenfig.org Local Community Group

Serving the Local CommunityKenfig.org local community group serves the initial communities of Kenfig, Maudlam, North Cornelly, South Cornelly,
Pyle, Kenfig Hill, Cefn Cribbwr, Stormy Down and Margam Village. The adjoining communties of Porthcawl, Bridgend together
with Port Talbot are also supported due to their close proximity, historical connections and due to the information being
made available to all through the medium of the Internet.
We are documenting the whole, entire history of the immediate area, not just Kenfig itself... through this website project.
Why this website incorporates the above areas? In medieval times Kenfig was awarded the status of a Borough. The Kenfig Borough or Old Bro Cynffig
included old Kenfig, modern Kenfig, Maudlam (Mawdlam), much of North Cornelly, Marlas, Pyle and some of Kenfig Hill.

The Margam EstateKenfig and surrounding areas were at one time encompassed within land
owned and managed by the Margam Estate, hence a background history of these wealthy landowners is included in this website.

Website Impact || Local CommunityThe Kenfig.org website was orignated in March 2003 with a view of constructing a comprehensive website on local history.
The site showed promise from day one with quite a large local following; in August 2003 it was decided to document the
local annual Gambo Race.
Gambo RaceTempted to construct a seperate website for this local event, it came to light that a gambo is a form of old farm cart
with Welsh connections dating from medieval times; it was decided to include the gambo race coverage on the Kenfig.org website
- this reasoning provided the initial mainstay marketing strategy for the entire project.
Local people visiting the site to view
photographs of the gambo race realised the website was actually associated with local history rather than solely with the local
community event itself.
Local Rural Development - Rural TourismThe Annual Gambo Race held each August Bank Holiday weekend throughout the Kenfig vicinity has been listed as a Carnival/Community Event
through the Reach (The Rural Development Programme in Bridgend) rural tourism directory.
